female-talks-with-drFor women who are sure that they do not want to have children or those that know they do not want to risk becoming pregnant in the future, female sterilization can be a viable option. Female sterilization is a highly effective long-term birth control method designed to prevent all future pregnancies without the need for birth control pills or common birth control devices like IUDs (intrauterine device) or implants. Our board-certified gynecologist was happy to answer a few common questions about female sterilization for women who may be interested in learning more.

Question #1: What are the advantages of female sterilization compared to birth control pills?

While both are extremely effective forms of contraception, female sterilization does offer unique advantages for some women. For example, it can be a tremendous relief and convenience to be protected from unwanted pregnancy without having to worry about taking a birth control pill every day or dealing with prescription refills. Additionally, some women prefer a non-hormonal birth control method.

Question #2: Will female sterilization decrease a woman’s sex drive?

Every case is different, but there is no reason that undergoing a female sterilization procedure would have a negative effect on a woman’s sex drive. After the procedure, patients should feel exactly the same as they did before. In fact, undergoing a sterilization may have the opposite effect and increase a woman’s sex drive due to eliminating any concerns about the potential for an unwanted pregancy.

Question #3: How painful will the female sterilization procedure be?

The level of discomfort after female sterilization depends on the specifics of each patient’s procedure. Female sterilization is performed under general anesthesia. Some residual soreness may occur for a week or two following the procedure, but this will fade.

Undergoing female sterilization is a serious decision that requires considerable thought, consideration, and consultation with an experienced reproductive healthcare specialist.
