Health Screening

Women's Health Screening GwinnettIn addition to the specialized services that we provide during a Well Woman Exam at Gynecology Associates of Gwinnett, we also regularly perform a variety of routine labs. We believe that regular health screenings are one of the best ways to ensure that you enjoy optimal health for many years to come.

Next Steps

In addition to meeting with you personally and taking a detailed medical history during your Well Woman Exam, Dr. Gould can also conduct several different routine lab tests specifically designed to screen for health concerns that are common among women. Some of these tests include:

  • Cholesterol Test (lipid panel): Elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides can cause a build-up of plaques in your arteries. These may lead to atherosclerosis, a condition wherein narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body result in increased blood pressure and hypertension.
  • Electrolytes Test: Electrolytes are vital salts and minerals present in the blood, like sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate that help conduct electrical impulses through the body. Certain conditions or medications can disrupt the balance of the body’s electrolytes, potentially impairing function or signaling a more serious concern.
  • Liver and Kidney Function: A comprehensive metabolic panel consists of several tests that screen for damage that may have been caused to the liver and/or kidneys, particularly if someone has a condition or is taking a drug that may adversely affect these organs.
  • Thyroid Function: The thyroid is a small gland located in the lower-front part of your neck that is responsible for helping to regulate many of the body’s processes, including metabolism, energy generation, and mood. Monitoring the levels of hormones produced by the thyroid is an important first step in diagnosing a number of potentially serious conditions.

Health Screening FAQs

Why are all of these different blood tests necessary?
Many serious medical conditions progress slowly and may cause serious damage to the internal organs before any outward symptoms manifest. By testing for and catching these conditions in the earliest stages, before they have had the opportunity to develop into serious problems, we can often address them in a more timely and comprehensive fashion.

How often do I need to have these tests performed?
The need for specific tests is usually determined on a case by case basis, by a doctor who has a thorough understanding of the patient’s full medical history. Individual patients may be at increased risk for certain conditions, but not for others, and so testing should always be carefully scheduled to take into consideration each individual patient’s health care needs. During your Well Woman Examination, Dr. Gould will perform a thorough examination in order to determine if any additional testing is necessary.
