Irregular menstrual bleeding is among the most common gynecological concerns. Irregular bleeding (whether it is especially light, heavy, or happening at unpredictable times) can be caused by a number of factors. While the primary cause of irregular bleeding is caused by changes in hormone levels, these hormone shifts can occur for many different reasons. That’s why the gynecological healthcare providers here at Gynecology Associates wanted to provide some helpful information about the potential causes of irregular bleeding.
Question #1: Is it true that simple lifestyle adjustments can help prevent the occurrence of irregular bleeding?
This is true. While it can be a symptom of an underlying health condition, for most women, irregular menstrual bleeding is simply caused by certain habits or lifestyle choices that can be addressed. Too much stress is a common cause of irregular bleeding. Additionally, working out too much, being overweight, and travel can lead to irregular bleeding.
Question #2: How does birth control affect menstrual bleeding?
Women can be affected in contrasting ways by different birth control methods. Since most birth control pills contain the hormones estrogen and progestin (or just progestin), going off birth control or changing birth control pills can lead to irregular bleeding. In some cases, birth control pills that contain only progestin may cause bleeding between periods. Additionally, using a hormonal IUD or birth control implant can lead to a decrease in monthly menstrual bleeding.
Question #3: Is irregular bleeding always a leading symptom of endometriosis?
While endometriosis is very common in women and irregular bleeding is one of the leading symptoms of this condition, other gynecological health concerns can also cause irregular bleeding. These include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It’s important for women who experience irregular bleeding to speak with a board-certified gynecologist in order to get an accurate diagnosis of any conditions they may be experiencing and receive the treatment they need.
While irregular bleeding may not be a sign of anything serious, it’s still important for women to be proactive and make sure that they are in good reproductive health. Our skilled, experienced gynecological healthcare providers can help provide a proper diagnosis and develop the most helpful treatment plan for every woman’s unique needs. For more information
