Menopause can affect a woman in many ways. Hormonal changes that the body experiences can have a profound impact on a woman’s health and wellness. And this applies to more than just reproductive health. Osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to lose density and become more fragile, is very common for women, especially those who have already transitioned into menopause. So in honor of National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month this May, the reproductive healthcare experts here at Gynecology Associates of Gwinnett wanted to discuss osteoporosis and provide some tips on how it can potentially be prevented.

Like any other health concern, taking steps to prevent osteoporosis before it occurs can pay massive dividends. We recommend the following osteoporosis prevention tips:

  • Consume nutrients that are beneficial to bone health including calcium, healthy proteins, and vitamin D.
  • Spending time in the sun every day, even just 15 minutes, can help increase vitamin D levels, though make sure to protect the skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen.
  • Exercise daily to strengthen bones and muscles, while helping to maintain a stable, healthy body weight that is good for bone health.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, as nicotine and alcohol can both harm the bones and contribute to additional bone loss.
  • Be aware of osteoporosis risk factors and make a point to bring up bone health during any annual check-up appointment.

For women who have already developed this condition, there are several helpful treatment options for osteoporosis available. This includes nutrient supplements, prescription medications, hormone replacement therapy, physical therapy, and more. Our reproductive healthcare experts work hard to develop treatment plans that best fit the needs and preferences of our patients.

Women who have transitioned into menopause, or those that are in the process, are strongly recommended to check up on the health and wellness of their bones. Taking a bone mineral density (BMD) test can be highly beneficial.
