Is Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Safe?

In recent years, we have seen an incredible rise in the popularity of non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments. Many women who experience vaginal dryness after menopause, or other common vaginal health symptoms, prefer having a non-surgical alternative to vaginal rejuvenation surgery. And while we have been major proponents of this treatment and the wonderful benefits that it can help provide, it’s important for women to understand that not all laser vaginal rejuvenation treatments are the same and some may be best avoided.

Some laser vaginal rejuvenation treatment manufacturers got themselves into hot water recently by claiming that their treatment was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The truth is, as of January 2020 none of these devices or treatments are FDA-approved and only FemTouch™ Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation is FDA-cleared. For anyone who may not know, FDA approval means that the agency has determined that the benefits of the product outweigh the known risks for the intended use. Whereas FDA clearance indicates the manufacturer can demonstrate that their product or treatment is “substantially equivalent to another similar legally marketed device” that already has already earned FDA clearance or approval. The women who seek treatment for their vaginal health concerns should know this from the beginning stages of their treatment journey.

With this in mind, it’s important to emphasize that despite issues reported about other laser vaginal rejuvenation treatments, we offer FemTouch™ Non-Surgical Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation. FemTouch™ is unique due to its use of FDA-cleared laser technology by Lumenis. When performed by an experienced, board-certified gynecologist, FemTouch™ is both very safe and highly effective for treating vaginal atrophy after menopause. We have used FemTouch™ to successfully treat vaginal dryness, vaginal itching, pain during sex, and even symptoms of stress urinary incontinence. The treatment is quick, simple, and requires no downtime for recovery.

As reproductive healthcare providers, we strongly believe in the importance of knowledge and transparency when it comes to the treatments we perform and their efficacy. After all, trust is an essential component in any woman’s relationship with her gynecologist and their medical team.
